Commercial modeling

Modeling Job Types:

Commercial Modeling

This is the most popular type of modeling and is sometimes misunderstood by many people.

A Commercial model is a little different from a fashion model, mainly due to the fact that the model can be any size, shape, height, weight ie. plus size model.

They usually appear in catalogs, newspapers, billboards or buses. They appear more ordinary looking compared to fashion models because they have average height and weight statistics. Thus, making them more representative of the average consumer.

Commercial models need to have the ability to look like a real person. By looking like a real person they mange to connect the client, consumer and the product. The client being the person who is selling the product.

Commercial models do not earn as much as fashion models but the rate of pay varies from place to place and from one job to another. An adult commercial model can make anything between $50 - $250 an hour depending on the market and children can also make up to $75 an hour.

In becoming a commercial model it does provide several advantages. Firstly, as previously mentioned there are no measurements etc to adhere to. It can be carried out on a part time basis just for some additional income. The hourly rate can be extremely good along with the flexibility of modeling when you want to or when you have the time to do so. But most of all you get the opportunity and excitement of seeing yourself in magazines, buses etc.

To be a commercial model you do not need to adhere to the same requirements as a fashion model but you do need to develop key skills:

  • Learn some acting skills and the ability to show different expressions because these allow you to sell the product to the consumer through your actions.
  • Be self-motivated.
  • Be confident.
  • Be a complete professional with a pleasant personality when interacting with other professionals ie models and photographers.
  • Ability to work long days within a busy atmosphere.
  • Maintain a healthy well balanced diet.
